EPA 608 Type 2 Practice Test: 2026 Rules
Last checked October 20, 2026
Type II is for high- and very high-pressure equipment such as split systems, rooftop units and most commercial refrigeration. Try three samples now.
Question 1 of 3
Which appliances can a technician holding only a Type II certification service?
Question 2 of 3
EPA defines a high-pressure appliance as one using a refrigerant whose liquid-phase saturation pressure at 104 °F is:
Question 3 of 3
An appliance charged with R-134a is classified as:
Who needs Type II
You need Type II to service, repair or dispose of medium-, high- and very high-pressure appliances. Small appliances and motor vehicle A/C are not included (40 CFR 82.161(a)).
EPA sorts refrigerants by their saturation pressure at 104 °F. For example, R-22 and R-410A are high-pressure, and R-134a is medium-pressure (40 CFR 82.152).
The evacuation table changed
Many study guides still show the old table. Today's Table 1 groups appliances by pressure class and charge size (40 CFR 82.156(a)):
| Appliance | Recovery equipment before Nov 15, 1993 | On or after Nov 15, 1993 |
|---|---|---|
| Very high-pressure | 0 in. Hg | 0 in. Hg |
| High-pressure, under 200 lb | 0 in. Hg | 0 in. Hg |
| High-pressure, 200 lb or more | 4 in. Hg | 10 in. Hg |
| Medium-pressure, under 200 lb | 4 in. Hg | 10 in. Hg |
| Medium-pressure, 200 lb or more | 4 in. Hg | 15 in. Hg |
The old "HCFC-22" rows now appear only in the separate standard for certifying recovery machines (40 CFR 82.158). Don't mix the two up.
Leak repair: two rules now
- Section 608 (40 CFR 82.157). Applies to appliances with 50 lb or more of an ozone-depleting refrigerant, such as R-22.
- AIM Act (40 CFR 84.106). Since January 1, 2026, it applies to many appliances with 15 lb or more of an HFC or another substitute with a GWP above 53. Residential and light commercial A/C and heat pumps are excluded. This is a separate rule from Section 608 (40 CFR 84.106). You need it on the job, but testing programs may not test it yet.
In our practice, AIM-only questions are labeled and left out of the timed mock exam.
Both rules use the same trigger leak rates: 30% for industrial process refrigeration, 20% for commercial refrigeration, and 10% for comfort cooling and other appliances. Repairs are generally due within 30 days. EPA has said it will reconsider parts of the 2026 rule, so check for updates.
Other Type II topics
- Recovering liquid first, and push-pull recovery
- Leak testing with nitrogen
- When a repair counts as "major"
- The 0 psig rule for non-major repairs
- Recovery cylinders and the 80% fill limit
- Handling A2L refrigerants such as R-454B and R-32
Common questions
Is Type II enough for residential work? It covers split systems and heat pumps. Window units and other small appliances need Type I (40 CFR 82.161(a)(1)).
Is Type II closed-book? Yes. Types II and III must be taken closed-book with a proctor (Appendix D).
