How the exam works

  • Four sections: Core, Type I (small appliances), Type II (medium-, high- and very high-pressure), Type III (low-pressure). Universal = Core + I + II + III. (40 CFR 82.161(a)(1))
  • Each test has at least 25 Core questions and at least 25 questions from each technical group. (82.161(c); Appendix D)
  • Passing score: 70% on closed-book proctored tests; 84% on mail-in Type I tests. Mail-in Type I tests can't be used toward Universal. (Appendix D to Subpart F, sections a and e)
  • Certification does not expire, but EPA can revoke it. (82.161(a)(3), (a)(5); EPA certification requirements page)

Suggested study order

  1. Core chapters 1 to 3 (science, laws, definitions). Everything else builds on them.
  2. Core chapters 4 to 7 (three Rs, recovery, evacuation, safety and cylinders).
  3. Core chapters 8 and 9 (certification, sales, records, penalties). Take a 25-question Core practice test and aim for 85% or better before moving on.
  4. Type I, the shortest section, to build confidence with the small-appliance rules.
  5. Type II, the largest section: the evacuation table, leak rates and leak inspection.
  6. Type III: low-pressure chillers, purge units and pressurizing for repairs.
  7. Take full-length mixed practice tests, then review missed topics using the citations.
