EPA 608 Test Online: Remote Proctoring in 2026
Last checked October 20, 2026
Yes, you can take the full EPA 608 exam from home, including Universal. It has to be proctored, and it has to come from an EPA-approved program.
What the rules require
EPA's standards don't say "in person." They say Types II, III and Universal must be closed-book, proctored and given in a secure environment by an approved certifying program. The proctor has to verify your photo ID (40 CFR Part 82, Appendix D).
Remote proctoring meets those requirements with a webcam, a microphone and a locked-down browser.
Type I is different. Some programs offer it open-book or by mail. That version needs 84% and doesn't count toward Universal. EPA also says an open-book Core can't be used for Universal (EPA certification requirements).
Who offers it
EPA's list of approved programs marks which ones test remotely. When we checked on 2026-10-20, 12 entries were marked "Remote testing available" and 2 were "Online testing only" (EPA list).
A few examples, from each program's own site. Details can change, so confirm before you buy.

Before test day
- Check your computer. Most programs offer a system test. Run it days ahead, not minutes ahead.
- Have your ID ready. A government-issued photo ID is the norm.
- Clear the room. No notes, books or second screens. The exam is closed-book.
- Know the retake policy. Programs differ on how many attempts you get and what retakes cost.
- Plan for a steady connection. Check what your program says happens if you get disconnected.
How to prepare at home
Practice the way you'll test: one question at a time, timed, with no notes.
Our free Core test runs in your phone's browser. Use practice mode to learn, then the timed 25-question mode to check that you're ready. Aim for 18 or better, twice in a row.
