EPA 608 Universal Practice Exam: 100 Questions

Last checked October 20, 2026

Universal means you can work on all equipment types. Practice the whole exam the way you'll take it.

What Universal means

A Universal technician is certified for small appliances (Type I), high-pressure equipment (Type II) and low-pressure equipment (Type III) (40 CFR 82.161(a)(1)(iv)).

Many employers ask for it, because a tech with Universal can be sent to any job.

How the Universal exam is built

A Universal test has 100 questions: 25 Core, 25 Type I, 25 Type II and 25 Type III (40 CFR Part 82, Appendix D).

The pass mark is 70%. Certifying programs such as ESCO and Mainstream apply it to each section, so you need 18 of 25 in every part. A strong score in one section won't make up for a weak one in another.

You can earn Universal in one sitting. You can also combine passing scores from separate Type I, II and III tests (Appendix D).

Two rules that trip people up

It has to be proctored. Universal requires a closed-book, proctored exam in a secure setting. A mail-in Type I score can't count toward it (Appendix D).

Open-book Core doesn't count. EPA says a Core test taken open-book can't be used for Universal (EPA certification requirements).

What happens if you miss a section

Policies vary by certifying program. Mainstream, for example, issues a card for the types you passed, as long as you passed Core. With ESCO, passed sections stay passed and you retake only the one you missed. Neither counts any type without Core. Check your program's retake rules and fees before you book.

How to use the mock exam

  1. Take it once early, without studying, to find your weakest section.
  2. Study that section, then retry your missed questions.
  3. Take the mock again under time.
  4. Book your proctored exam once you clear 18 of 25 in every section on two separate tries.

Common questions

How long is the Universal exam? It depends on the program. Mainstream's remote Universal exam allows up to 3 hours, with no calculator (Mainstream).

Does Universal expire? No. Section 608 credentials don't expire (EPA certification requirements).

When do I get my card? Programs must send results and a wallet card within 30 days of the exam (Appendix D). Many are faster.
